New SIRIM-EIU Safety Label and Seminar on Controlled Electrical Appliances Enforcement in Sarawak
About Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Energy Commission (EC) and Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) :
Energy Commission (EC) is the regulator for electrical and electronic appliances placed in the market of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, while Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) is the regulator for electrical and electronic appliances places in the market of the state of Sarawak. Both EC and EIU have an important role to protect the industry, consumers and public from dangers arising from the use and supply of electricity. To protect consumers and public safety when handling the electrical and electronic appliances, both agencies assess the compliance of these products to the relevant national and international standard requirements. Certificate of Approval (CoA) is issued to the approved products are also required to be affixed with either the SIRIM-ST labels, if the products are to be placed in the market of Peninsular Malaysia or Sabah, or the SIRIM-EIU labels if the products are to be placed in Sarawak.
The MoU between EC and EIU was signed in November 2015. Realising the difficulty in trading electrical appliances within Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, and that movement of goods within Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak are also considered internal movement of goods rather than imported goods, the EC and EIU has reached to an understanding that both agencies will recognise and accept both the SIRIM-ST and SIRIM-EIU labels. With this understanding, appliances approved by EC and affixed with the SIRIM-ST labels can be traded freely in Sarawak. Likewise appliances approved by EIU and affixed with SIRIM-EIU labels can be traded freely in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. The MoU is a great advantage to the industries specifically as they need not repeat the testing and certification process when the electrical appliances are traded across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
