Malaysiakini.com – Elevating The Aerospace Business: Achieving Success in The Space Industry Through AS 9100 Certification

The aerospace industry is a testament to the remarkable heights of human innovation, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. In this dynamic and safety-critical field, where the sky is not the limit but the starting point, businesses must soar above the competition.

However, the aerospace industry faces ever-increasing demands for safety, reliability, and quality, along with the need for rigorous Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To achieve their goals and ensure excellence, safety and global recognition, aerospace organisations are embracing AS 9100, the Aerospace Quality Management Systems (AQMS) certification scheme

AS 9100: More than a certification

The AS 9100 is more than just a set of rules and regulations; it is a strategic tool for achieving success in the aerospace industry. It provides guidelines and regulations for implementing a Quality Management System (QMS) tailored to aviation, space, and defence organisations. Companies operating in the aerospace sector must consistently manufacture and improve safe, dependable products that meet or surpass consumer and regulatory criteria to ensure satisfaction.

Malaysia’s Aerospace Landscape: A Rising Star

Malaysia holds a significant position within the world’s largest air travel market, thanks to its strategic location in the Asia-Pacific region. The nation boasts top-tier infrastructures like KLIA Aeropolis, Subang Aerotech Park, Senai Aerospace Park, Serendah High Value Manufacturing Park, and Kulim Hi-Tech Park.  Furthermore, Malaysia anticipates becoming Southeast Asia’s leading aerospace nation by 2030 under the MAIB2030, which spans from 2015 to 2030, by being an essential link in the world’s aerospace supply chain. The program aims to generate RM55.2 billion in total revenue and more than 32,000 positions with high income salaries.

As a result, the Malaysian aerospace sector has experienced substantial growth, emerging as Southeast Asia’s second-largest aerospace industry.  With over 27,500 jobs generated, primarily in the MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) and aero-manufacturing subsectors, the industry has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Investments from over 230 domestic and foreign companies. In terms of revenue, the industry is anticipated to provide RM20.4 billion in revenue for MRO, RM21.2 billion for aero manufacturing, and RM13.6 billion for engineering and design services by 2030¹.

The Significance of AS 9100 Certification

The Aerospace Quality Management Systems Certificate Scheme is essential for all businesses and organisations in the aerospace sector, including those involved in designing, manufacturing, maintenance, and services. Whether a company operates in commercial or military aviation, space, or defence, it is imperative that the brand is associated with safety, airworthiness, and adherence to global quality standards. Moreover, all leading aircraft OEMs require their suppliers and subcontractors to be AS9100-certified.

Benefits of AS 9100 Aerospace Quality Management System²

  1. Enhanced access to global market opportunities.

Organisations with AS 9100 AQMS certification are better positioned to engage with aerospace industry players worldwide, from companies to government bodies. This certification opens doors to larger-scale business opportunities, potentially increasing revenue and growth prospects. Many government contracts, especially in aerospace and defence, mandate relevant certifications, making AS 9100 certification a critical asset.

  1. Improved brand image

AS 9100 AQMS enhances the organisation’s image and reputation by demonstrating their commitment to meeting international aerospace standards. It signifies that these organisations are trusted and capable players in the aerospace industry.

  1. Assurance of product safety and reliability

In line with the government’s strategy to bolster the local aerospace industry, AS 9100 certification ensures product safety and reliability, verified by SIRIM’s professionally-trained and highly experienced auditors. Certification serves as a stamp of approval, signifying that the organisation takes safety and reliability seriously.

SIRIM QAS and Malaysia’s Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030

En. Zakaria Mohamad Nor, Head Of Section Mechanical, Electrical and Automotive Sector of SIRIM QAS shared plans aligned with the Malaysia Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, aiming to make Malaysia the No. 1 Aerospace Nation in Southeast Asia. Through NAICO Malaysia, MITI has designated SIRIM as one of the service providers in the aerospace industry supply chain.

“In accordance with international aerospace standards AS9100 (aero production), AS9110 (maintenance, repair and overhaul) and AS9120 (aerospace parts distribution), SIRIM QAS initiated a five-year programme for the development of the Aerospace Quality Management Systems (AQMS). The aviation and defence industries as well as its supply chain are subject to these standards.”

A summary of the program’s highlights include:

  1. AS9100 Certification: SIRIM received accreditation for the AS9100 certification scheme from the United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) on March 27, 2023. The scheme officially launched on May 23, 2023, during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2023). This certification is now available to the aerospace industry supply chain at competitive rates, leveraging local aerospace expertise.

  1. AS9110 and AS9120 Certification: Certification schemes for AS9110 (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) and SA9120 (aerospace parts distribution) are in progress, with anticipated accreditations in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

  1. Singularity Aerotech Asia (SAT.ASIA): Singularity Aerotech Asia is one of the providers of aircraft engineering and technology, that has more than a decade of experience in the aerospace industry. They provide end-to-end engineering solutions to international aerospace businesses with a focus on engineering design and stress analysis of aircraft structures. The company is one of the first to receive the AS9100 certification through SIRIM.

In essence, SIRIM QAS is actively contributing to Malaysia’s aerospace industry’s growth and competitiveness on the global stage by establishing and offering critical aerospace quality certifications. Malaysia distinguishes itself in the Asia-Pacific region for MRO services, ranking among the top three. This competitive edge is sustained by strategic location, accessibility to the region, cost-effectiveness, and the availability of industry-skilled talent.
